Who are we?

Who are The Grateful Dads?

The Grateful Dads fathers group has been growing steadily since it was established in 1998 by Jonathan Marks, realtor with At Home In Marin/Alain Pinel Realtors and founder of Grateful Graphics. The Grateful Dads was started in Marin County, California shortly after the birth of his first daughter. He saw it as a way to incorporate his love of the outdoors, desire to exercise and also give him the chance to bond with his newborn baby outside of the conventional home environment.

Jonathan spent much of his pre-family life enjoying outdoor activities of all types from rock-climbing in Yosemite to hiking in the Alps and trekking in the Himalayas. He decided that taking four month old Maddie out with other dads and their children for a hike on the Marin trails would be a refreshing way to bond with his daughter while getting a good workout at the same time.

From this seed of an idea the group has grown to include well over 300 fathers in the San Francisco Bay Area alone and has caught the eye of regional and national press. It is anticipated that the Grateful Dads will expand their activity schedule to include biking, camping, rock climbing, kayaking, and other such enjoyable outdoor pursuits with regional Grateful Dads Chapters forming all over the country including right here in West Virginia.

Mountain State Grateful Dads

Mountain State Grateful Dads was formed in Spring of 2008 in Morgantown, WV by Bryan Staley, Chris Russell, Travis Carrow, and their children. After a slow but enjoyable start, we are looking forward to 2009. We welcome all fathers and their kids to join us and “discover the wonders of nature” right in our own backyards.

The Grateful Dads Mission Statement

The Grateful Dads is a way to bring together a community of men who share the same desire to enjoy the richness and bounty of the natural surroundings in which we live and instill in our children the same mindset. To provide a safe and casual environment for men to be together who are experiencing the same feelings and concerns about fatherhood and its limitations and celebrations. By virtue of its reason for existence, the Grateful Dads has brought together a broad spectrum of men of all professions and ages, all of whom are committed to being successful, nurturing Dads. Thanks to this common goal no one has ever felt like a stranger; the friendships are immediate and the camaraderie sincere for both fathers and children alike.
